Media theorists -Laura Mulvey
Laura Mulvey
Laura Mulvey is a theorist who came up with the concept of the 'Male gaze' in 1975. The concept of the gaze is one that deals with how an audience views the people presented. For feminists it can be thought of in three ways; how men look at women, how women look at themselves and how women look at other women. Mulvey suggests two distinct modes of the male gaze of this era: "voyeuristic" (i.e. seeing woman as image "to be looked at") and "fetishistic" (i.e. seeing woman as a substitute for "the lack," the underlying psychoanalytic fear of castration or desire for sex). Mulvey believes that the audience view characters from the perspective of a heterosexual male. As stated in previous articles on the blog, the camera tends to linger on the curves of the female body which objectifies the women in question. In some cases theorists have noted the sexualising of the female body even in situations where the sexiness has nothing to do with the product being advertised.
