Deutschland 83

Summary

Set in a divided Germany in 1983, during a peak period for Cold War tensions between East and West. Martin Rauch, a 24-year-old East German soldier plucked from obscurity, goes undercover as a West German soldier for the East Germany Secret Service. This Long Form TV Drama features heavy themes of War and Violence, Relationships, Family and Conspiracy and mostly relates to the genre of thriller.

The Cold War-
  • The Cold War was a war that didn't involve any physical combat that was mainly fought between the USA and the USSR (now known as Russia).
  • It started in 1945 just after WW2 ended and lasted for about 45 years. During WW2, tensions between the USA and the USSR were growing as Stalin and Truman worked with Churchill to defeat the Nazi's, and then decide how they were going to deal with the defeated Germany at the Potsdam conference. This didn't go well though as the USA and USSR disagreed on how Germany should be dealt with, due to the fact that The USA was Capitalist and the USSR was Communist. Because of this and other reasons, such as Truman hiding the fact that America had developed an Atomic bomb from Stalin, tensions were great between the two nations.
  •  When Germany was finally agreed to be split between 4 zones, one for France, Britain, the USA and the USSR, the Soviets tried to make their zone communist, whilst the other allies said that this was wrong and thought it should be Capitalist/democratic.
  • This meant that the Soviets faced a lot of opposition from their former allies, and as the USSR was trying to expand their Communist conquests, they decided to split Berlin into East (to the USSR) and West (to the USA etc.) which resulted in the famous Berlin Wall.
  • The Cold War also resulted in high tensions due to the threats of the use of the Nuclear missiles that the USA and USSR said they were going to use on each other. This made people's everyday lives more dangerous but also more uncertain.
  • Because East Germany was inland, they did not have the access to imports that West Germany had. This resulted in different produce being available in one and not in the other.
  • The East was also largely communist as the USSR had control over it, whilst the West was Capitalist. This meant that people would have been generally poorer in the East as wealth is shared equally in communist states, whilst the West would have been quite prosperous. Also, the East would have been under a dictatorship whilst the West would have been democratic.
Able Archer 83-
  • Able Archer 83 is the codename for a command post exercise carried out in November 1983 by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
  • The purpose of the exercise was to simulate a period of conflict escalation, culminating in the US military attaining simulated DEFCON 1 coordinated nuclear attack.

Audience profile for Deutschland 83

•Demographic

The audience for Deutschland 83 is arguably from ABC1 demographic as the audience would require an extent of background knowledge on the cold war.

•Psychographic

Psychographics is a qualitative methodology used to describe consumers on psychological attributes. Psychographics have been applied to the study of personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests, and lifestyles.
Arguably audiences of Deutschland 83 would enjoy similar shows in the genre of Deutschland 83 (Thriller, History, War, Drama) due to the niche topic. They may have a strong interest in historical dramas such as Poldark or films such as Shindler's list.

Both demographics and psychographics are contributing factors to the content and advertising which relates to the uses and gratification theory which suggests that the consumers are actively participating in interpreting and integrating media into their lives. The audience may effect the context of the drama as typically there would have been a need for coverage of the niche topic as the drama takes place in just one year (with following seasons taking a similar position (Deutschland 86)). This also relates to the content of the Long Form TV Drama as as well as the historical element, the episode also features themes of spy thriller, drama and partial romance. This is arguably factorial of the psychographics as the series is dependent on interesting content to provide to the audience which may not have been achievable if the production team decided to simply focus on the historical aspect and produce a documentary form. Advertising is also effected by the audience as advertisements will be advertised where necessary which draws a certain audience. For example people that watch Channel 4 and use More 4 will be shown advertisements relating to the show as the drama attempts to engage that type of audience. The TV Drama may also be advertised on social media in order to engage younger audiences of the ABC1 demographic and through 'cookies' may be able to tailor the advertisements based on what content social media users already view or 'follow'.
