Representation of Theresa May in UK newspapers

The Sun's front cover shows a very negative view on Theresa May. This is arguably due to Theresa May being a Conservative leader which contrasts to The Sun's right wing affiliation. They use a pun in her surname with the noun 'dismay', which is typical of the newspaper genre. Despite the negative headline they have not used an unflattering photo.

The Guardian also create a negative stance on Theresa May despite their similar political views. The newspaper uses extremely unflattering photos of her 'coughing and spluttering' to perhaps show unprofessionalism.

This front page has received backlash due to the puerile and derogatory nature attacking May with the portrayal of her as Cruella Devil, the antagonist from the popular Disney film '101 Dalmatians'.

This front cover from the Daily Mail highlights Van Zoonen's Feminist theory as this newspaper focuses on May's and Sturgeon's legs which moves the focus of their political importance and instead sexualises them in the headline 'Never mind Brexit, who won Legs-it!'.

The Daily Mirror uses the repetition of 'lies' in their headline along with an unflattering photo to convey their negative attitude on Theresa May. Similar to the Guardian, this newspaper is believed to have more left wing political affiliations, so it is therefore slightly peculiar to see such a negative portrayal of Theresa May as she is Conservative yet the paper critiques the 'Tory broken promises'.
